Four-time World and Canadian Champion figure skater, Kurt Browning, is the Canadian Children's Book Centre's first "Canadian Children's Book Centre Idol".
Browning, a Guinness World Record holder, recipient of the Order of Canada, and three-time Olympic team member, will kick off a week of Gold Medal Reading during TD Canadian Children's Book Week, November 14-21.
This year, the theme for Canada's largest national literary event celebrating Canadian books for children and teens, is Gold Medal Reading, in honour of the 2010 Winter Olympics being held on home soil.
Browning will launch the event by participating in the annual TD Grade One Book Giveaway Program, one of the highlights of Book Week. He will make an appearance at a Toronto school to hand out copies of Let's Go! The Story of Getting from There to Here, by Lizann Flatt and illustrated by Scot Ritchie. This title will be distributed to more than 500,000 grade one children across Canada. Browning's eldest child is a grade one student this year.
"When we learn to read we start to take it for granted. Now that I am watching the amazement on my child's face as he conquers a new word and then starts reading that word in his daily life I am reminded of the power and respect that goes with the ability to read."
"With the power of reading comes education, but also space and time travel, talking stuffed Pooh Bears, The hidden world of Og and an endless supply of journeys with your imagination."
— Kurt Browning
